The two complete, operational, factory tested 1 MW power plants for United Mines II were installed in one day. This installation took place on April 21, 2003, and the project was operational and selling power on May 9, 2003.
The picture shows a large crane moving an entire power plant from the back of a truck to a concrete slab. The 2 MW of United Mines II stands next to the existing 3 MW of United Mines I which was owned and operated by Envirogas, the subsidiary of Ridgewood U.K. United Mines I was built several years ago. The landfill was large enough originally for the first three 1 MW plants. Expansion of the landfill increased gas supply so that the new 2 MW can operate and later an additional 1 MW was added. The long-term supply of gas is predictable based on the number of tons of garbage dumped. That data is extremely accurate because every truck is weighed because tipping fees are charged by the ton. The brilliance of Jenbacher (a subsidiary of GE), the equipment manufacturer, is that everything is built and tested at the factory. No local assembly is required. The projects on the United Mines site were sold as part of the sale of the UK business in February 2007.
